Why this is the answer

Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the U.S. military, living or dead. It is celebrated on November 11 because that is the day World War I ended in 1918; the holiday was first called Armistice Day, and in 1954 Congress renamed it Veterans Day. Either official answer is accepted: a holiday to honor people in the military, or people who have served. Memory hook: November 11, for everyone who served; Memorial Day, in May, for those who died.
