Question 125 of 128 · Symbols and Holidays · Holidays

What is Independence Day?

Accepted answers

  • A holiday to celebrate U.S. independence (from Britain)
  • The country’s birthday

Any one of these is accepted, unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

Independence Day, the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the day the colonies announced they were free from Great Britain. That is why it is also called the country's birthday: the United States counts its age from that date. Either official answer is accepted. Memory hook: July 4, 1776 is on the Declaration and on the Statue of Liberty's tablet, and it is the day the country was born.
