The civil rights movement fought to end racial discrimination. In the 1900s many states had laws that separated people by race, in schools, restaurants and neighborhoods, and that made it hard for Black Americans to vote. After World War II a movement of peaceful protests, marches and boycotts set out to end those laws. It won two landmark federal laws: the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made discrimination based on race, religion, sex or national origin illegal, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which stopped states from denying the vote because of race.
