Why did the United States enter the Vietnam War?

In the Vietnam War, from the late 1950s to 1975, the United States supported the government of South Vietnam against communist North Vietnam. As in Korea, the reason was the Cold War fear that communism would spread from one country to the next, and the United States entered to stop it. The war ended in 1975 when Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, fell, and the whole country came under communist control; almost 60,000 Americans died or went missing.
