Abraham Lincoln is famous for many things. Name one.

On the 65/20 list: one of the 20 questions for applicants 65 or older with 20 years as permanent residents.

Accepted answers

  • Freed the slaves (Emancipation Proclamation)
  • Saved (or preserved) the Union
  • Led the United States during the Civil War
  • 16th president of the United States
  • Delivered the Gettysburg Address

Any one of these is accepted, unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President and led the United States through the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. He is remembered for saving the Union, keeping the country in one piece when eleven states tried to leave; for the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which declared the slaves in the Confederate states free; and for the Gettysburg Address, the speech in which he described a government of the people, by the people, for the people. He was assassinated in April 1865, days after the war ended. Name any one. Memory hook: the Civil War president, who freed the slaves and saved the Union.
