Question 93 of 128 · American History · 1800s
The Civil War had many important events. Name one.
Accepted answers
- (Battle of) Fort Sumter
- Emancipation Proclamation
- (Battle of) Vicksburg
- (Battle of) Gettysburg
- Sherman’s March
- (Surrender at) Appomattox
- (Battle of) Antietam/Sharpsburg
- Lincoln was assassinated.
Any one of these is accepted, unless the question asks for more than one.
Why this is the answer
The official list gives eight events, and a few anchor the whole war. It began at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, in 1861. In 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and that same year the Union won the Battle of Gettysburg, the battle that stopped the Confederate army from invading the North; Vicksburg, Antietam (also called Sharpsburg) and Sherman's March are the other names on the list. In April 1865 the Confederate army surrendered at Appomattox, and a few days later Lincoln was assassinated. Name any one. Memory hook: it starts at Fort Sumter and ends at Appomattox.
