Question 86 of 128 · American History · Colonial Period and Independence

George Washington is famous for many things. Name one.

On the 65/20 list: one of the 20 questions for applicants 65 or older with 20 years as permanent residents.

Accepted answers

  • “Father of Our Country”
  • First president of the United States
  • General of the Continental Army
  • President of the Constitutional Convention

Any one of these is accepted, unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

George Washington is called the Father of Our Country because he was there at every step of its founding. He was the general who led the Continental Army against Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. He presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. And when the new government began, he was elected the first President, serving from 1789 to 1797 and then stepping down, which set the example of a president giving up power. Name any one of the four. Memory hook: general, chairman, first President.
