What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance?

Why this is the answer

When we say the Pledge of Allegiance we show loyalty to the flag and to the United States, the republic the flag stands for. The words say it directly: allegiance to the flag, and to the republic for which it stands. People stand, face the flag and put their right hand over their heart, and it is said at naturalization ceremonies. Either official answer works. Memory hook: the flag is the symbol, the United States is what it symbolizes.
