Why this is the answer

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. France gave it to the United States in 1886 as a symbol of friendship, and it became a symbol of freedom and of immigration, because for the immigrants arriving by ship through nearby Ellis Island it was the first thing they saw of America. The tablet in the statue's left hand carries the date July 4, 1776.
