During the Cold War the main concern of the United States was the spread of communism, the system in which the government plans the economy, controls most resources and is usually run by a single party. The Soviet Union was communist, other countries such as China and North Korea were becoming communist, and the United States tried to stop it from spreading further, which is why it fought in Korea and Vietnam. Because both sides were building large armies in case they went to war, the other great fear of those years was nuclear war. Either official answer is accepted.
