Why this is the answer
Thirteen states sit on the Canadian border, and naming one is enough: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington or Alaska. The border itself runs more than five thousand miles from Maine in the east to Alaska in the west. It was first set by the Treaty of Paris of 1783, after the Revolutionary War, and the disputes that arose afterward were settled by treaty rather than by force. An International Boundary Commission headed by two commissioners, one American and one Canadian, maintains it. Memory hook: the northern tier, plus Alaska, which touches Canada even though it is nowhere near the others.
