What movement tried to end racial discrimination?

The civil rights movement. It began in its modern form in 1954, when the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, and its goal was to end racial discrimination against African Americans and win full and equal rights for Americans of all races. Its methods were deliberately nonviolent: bus boycotts, sit-ins and marches. The results were written into law. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made segregation in public facilities and racial discrimination in employment and education illegal, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which banned literacy tests and the other special requirements used to keep people from voting.
