Why this is the answer
This answer changes with each election, so USCIS publishes it on its test updates page rather than printing it in the study booklet. The context worth knowing is the party system around it. The Constitution set up no parties, yet two major ones have dominated national politics for well over a century: the Democratic Party, which Jackson built out of the Democratic-Republicans, and the Republican Party, which replaced the Whigs in the 1860s. Every President belongs to one of them or, in principle, to none, and party membership in the United States is voluntary. Memory hook: check which party holds the presidency when you study, and answer with the party, not the person.
