How many U.S. senators are there?

Why this is the answer

There are 100 U.S. senators: two for each of the 50 states, no matter how many people live there. California, the most populous state, and Wyoming, the least populous, each send two. That equal count is the reason the Senate exists, because the small states would not have accepted a Congress where only population counted. Memory hook: 50 states times 2 senators equals 100.
