Why this is the answer

Africans, or people from Africa. By 1700 large numbers of Africans were being brought to the American colonies and sold as slaves. Men, women and children were taken against their will and were often separated from their families at sale. They worked without payment and without basic rights, most of them in agriculture but also at many other kinds of work in the colonies. The contradiction is the point worth holding onto: a country founded on individual freedom and democratic beliefs held people in slavery, and that contradiction became one of the major causes of the Civil War.
